At seven o’clock on Tuesday morning, the air in Manchester smelled particularly sweet. It wasn’t because it was ahead of rush hour and the city had the last eleven hours to flush out the emissions created by traffic the day before, nor was it because of my love for the city and its homely feel.

In actuality, it was because I’d just finished my last night shift before heading off to Bratislava, Slovakia on Friday to start off a 13-day journey through central Europe.

Working three night shifts a week over the summer hasn’t been the easiest slog, but the milestone that is my travels for August has been keeping me going and it’s, almost, finally here.

Last year, I went on a similar trip with my girlfriend, wading our way through the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia before making the crossing to Finland.

Stood atop St Olaf's Church in Tallinn, Estonia. One of the many things I did on an amazing trip through the Baltic states last year.

It was one of the best trips I’ve been on and it felt like I had done so much. Not only had I seen, ate and drank a lot, but I also learned a great deal of information and had a lot of pictures to boot.

It got me thinking that I should try something a little different for my upcoming trip, and so I came up with the idea to blog daily about our adventures over the next couple of weeks. Then I settled on it.

So join me as we head from Bratislava to Vienna, Austria, Prague, Czech Republic and then to Berlin, Germany across two weeks, as I’m sure to have plenty of stories, facts and photos to share with you all.

Central Europe, here we come!
